Prada SS27 in Milan: a whole collection of skirts

Prada gave its entire spring 2027 show to the skirt, and opened Milan Fashion Week with it. The pair have been narrowing their focus for several seasons. Their menswear show over the summer took the five-pocket jean as its subject, an ordinary garment. Simons said then that he had not worn denim in twenty years; he was wearing it backstage at this show. Their stated interest is that people can be individual in common garments, depending on how they are worn and combined. The house also opened a new flagship in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, where it was founded in 1913. It runs to eight floors and holds a patisserie, a contemporary art space, an underground gallery, a museum and private salons.

MIUCCIA PRADA AND RAF SIMONS HAVE DESIGNED THE HOUSE TOGETHER SINCE 2020. THEY GAVE THE WHOLE SPRING 2027 SHOW TO ONE GARMENT.
THE SKIRTS CAME KNEE-LENGTH AND MINI, A-LINE AND PLEATED, PLAIN AND EMBROIDERED.
GREY PLEATED ONES. GREEN STRAIGHT ONES. FLORAL MINIS UNDER LEATHER COATS. WRAP SKIRTS SLIT TO THE TOP OF THE THIGH.
OTHERS WERE SHEER AND PLEATED IN FADED PASTELS, OR PANELLED WITH BLOCKS OF SEQUINED FLOWERS.
SOME WERE CUT LIKE KILTS IN WOOL, WITH RAW EDGES AND OVERSIZED BUTTON HOOKS LEFT ON SHOW.
THE FLOWERED ONES WERE ENCRUSTED HEAVILY ENOUGH THAT THEY CLINKED AS THE MODELS WALKED.
PRADA HAS SAID THIS BEFORE. IN 2006 SHE CALLED THE SKIRT A KIND OF UNIFORM: "THE SKIRT FOR ME IS LIKE A T-SHIRT."
AN EXHIBITION OF HER SKIRTS MADE BETWEEN 1998 AND 2004, CALLED WAIST DOWN, OPENED IN SHANGHAI AND THEN TOURED.
TWENTY YEARS LATER SHE CALLS THE SKIRT A CANVAS. NAOMI WATTS, MICHELLE WILLIAMS AND UMA THURMAN WATCHED FROM THE FRONT ROW.
