Saint Laurent turned a peasant shoe into a heel

The espadrille is a peasant shoe that got a Paris promotion. The jute-soled canvas slipper has been worn in the Pyrenees and Catalonia for centuries. Then in 1970, Yves Saint Laurent asked the Catalan maker Castaner to put it on a wedge, and the espadrille walked onto the runway. Centuries on the farm, one season to the front row.
