Diana's Travolta dress: Victor Edelstein's midnight-blue velvet, the White House dance of 9 November 1985

Diana, Princess of Wales, wore Victor Edelstein's midnight-blue velvet gown to Ronald Reagan's White House dinner for the Prince and Princess of Wales on 9 November 1985, and danced with John Travolta to music from Saturday Night Fever. The photographs are the White House's own, which is why they are free to show. She consigned the dress to Christie's for a charity sale in June 1997, weeks before her death. In December 2019 it went unsold at Kerry Taylor Auctions in London, and the day after, Historic Royal Palaces paid 264,000 pounds including premium, 220,000 at the hammer, to bring it into the Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection at Kensington Palace, more than twenty years after it had left.
