On 26 September 1966 Yves Saint Laurent (@ysl) opened Saint Laurent Rive Gauche at 21 rue de Tournon, in the sixth arrondissement, and sold ready-to-wear under his own name.
He built a separate collection rather than a cheaper version of the couture, and gave the prototypes the same care.
New York followed in 1968 and London the year after.

The post, as it ran
01ON 26 SEPTEMBER 1966 YVES SAINT LAURENT OPENED A SHOP ON THE LEFT BANK AND SOLD CLOTHES STRAIGHT OFF THE RAIL.
02IT WAS CALLED SAINT LAURENT RIVE GAUCHE, AT 21 RUE DE TOURNON, AND CATHERINE DENEUVE WAS ITS GODMOTHER.
03HIS OWN REASON: "I HAD HAD ENOUGH OF MAKING DRESSES FOR JADED BILLIONAIRES".
04HE HAD DRESSED DENEUVE FOR LUIS BUNUEL'S FILM BELLE DE JOUR.
05THE CLOTHES WERE NOT A CHEAPER COUTURE. HE DESIGNED A SEPARATE COLLECTION AND MADE THE PROTOTYPES WITH THE SAME CARE.
06A NEW YORK SHOP FOLLOWED IN 1968, AND LONDON THE YEAR AFTER.
07SIXTY YEARS LATER, PARIS OPENS ITS NEXT READY-TO-WEAR WEEK ON 28 SEPTEMBER.
