Ralph Lauren's horseman has been in court since 1984, and a mark cleared on shirts was barred on fragrance
Ralph Lauren showed Spring 2027 at the Jack Shainman Gallery in lower Manhattan on 9 September 2026, the eve of the official calendar. The single horseman on the chest carries a paper trail going back to 1984. The useful part for anyone who licenses a mark: trademark rights are decided market by market, not brand by brand. The United States Polo Association had a court's permission from 1984 to sell licensed goods carrying a mounted polo player, and a 2006 Manhattan jury cleared its Double Horsemen on apparel when the letters U.S.P.A. rode alongside. None of that carried across to the fragrance counter. Judge Robert W. Sweet of the Southern District of New York issued a permanent injunction, and on 11 February 2013 the Second Circuit affirmed it in case No. 12-1346, holding that a finding of no confusion in one industry does not settle another. So a licensing pack that clears a logo for shirts has cleared it for shirts. The scent, the eyewear and the homeware are separate arguments, each with its own evidence.
